Jackson built the central portion of the present Hermitage mansion between 1818 and 1819 on a site chosen by his wife. The square, two-story brick building followed a four-room, center-hall plan with parlor, dining, and two bedrooms on the first floor and four additional bedrooms on the second. The Hermitage was the plantation home of Andrew Jackson, seventh president of the United States, from 1804 until his death in 1845.

The stage is 130’10” wide and 53’1” deep with a 57’4” x 36’0” proscenium opening. An orchestra shell walls are available for use if desired. With a maximum seating capacity of 2,472, including 47 pit seats, Andrew Jackson Hall is TPAC’s largest facility.

We did the regular mansion tour, very informative and we got to see everything inside the house. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the house and Andrew Jackson. It was a chilly December day so we didn't tour the grounds but we hope to come back one day and spend more time there. Many shows impose ticket limits to allow as many people as possible to have equal access to seats.
The web page about the Wagon Tour advises that the wagons operate "from March to October, weather permitting." So one of our party could hold them while the others toured the home. The museum at the start is easily navigable. There is a relatively short walk to the house itself that should be possible however there are steps up to the house and there are steep stairway to reach the upper floor that may be more difficult. I do not believe there is a lift in the house. So the upper floor of the house may be too much.

This allowed Jackson to add acreage to the farm, bringing the total acreage up to 1,050 acres. Construction began on Andrew Jackson's Hermitage mansion in 1819. Designed in the Federal style popular in the South, the mansion was made of brick. Boasting eight rooms, the mansion also included a summer kitchen located in the basement.
In the extraordinarily bitter campaign of 1828, he defeated Adams with a majority of 178 electoral votes to 83. His election was in many ways the first modern one, because by this time most States chose their electors by popular vote. His victory was clouded by the death of his wife. She died in January 1829, only a short time before he departed from The Hermitage for the inauguration. This is one that is on the top of my list for the next time we visit the Gatlinburg area. The tour includes extensive information pertaining to the 300 slaves he owned.
Originally thought to become the housing for a branch of the United States Military Academy, these plans were never realized. A third generation of the Jackson family remained on the farm as caretakers for the State of Tennessee, until 1893, in which the property was deeded to the Ladies’ Hermitage Association. In 1804, Andrew Jackson purchased a 425-acre tract of land that he named The Hermitage. For the next 15 years, Jackson and his wife, Rachel, lived in a cluster of log buildings on the property.
Here they entertained notable visitors including President James Monroe and Aaron Burr. Jackson led the life of a gentleman farmer at The Hermitage until 1813, when the Tennessee militia called him to active service. His military conduct during the Creek War brought him a commission as a major general in the regular United States Army. After the Battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812, he returned to The Hermitage a national hero. Hubby is a huge History buff, so we had to visit. 1100+ acres of beautiful countryside, highlighted by Jackson's home.

Hello, My sons (mid-20's) and I visited The Hermitage in early-August. It was my second visit, having been there a decade ago. The VIP Tour also includes admission to the grounds and a guided-tour of the mansion, but it adds access to the beautiful veranda for a wonderful view of the property from the front of the mansion). The tour guide also takes you around the rest of the grounds and buildings, rather than you doing it yourself.
What a great idea that they turned the Hermitage into a museum. It would be amazing to walk around and hear all the history. I will have to check it out the next time I am in the area. I think it would be such a great place to see. I love all the historical sites, so this would be a great one for me.

Like most tourist and cultural institutions, we have had staffing challenges in the last two years. Most of our entire staff is new, including the interpreters in the mansion. They are all undergoing training to ensure they deliver exceptional tours each time, but as you can imagine, this does take a while to perfect.
